OSE explained why scheduled cuts are not made: "It can have serious consequences"

OSE President, Raúl Montero, explained this Wednesday in inquiry that the Frente Amplista senator Enrique Rubio did to him why andn the state company did not make cuts in the face of the water crisis instead of increasing the salinity of the water.

In the instance, which he shared with the Ministers of Environment and Public Health in the Senate, Montero argued the decision to change the sodium and chloride limits.

“What are the other alternatives? There aren’t many left. They can be make scheduled cuts. There are very close cities, such as San Pablo, which six or seven years ago did opt for programmed cuts. They rotated who they administered, “he commented this Wednesday,

However, “based on the information available and the experience that OSE also has, interrupting the water service can have serious consequences”.

“One of the main guarantees of the bacteriological quality of drinking water, apart from having good treatment and efficient disinfection, is that one can maintain positive pressures within the network,” Indian.

“If we have zero pressure in the network, why do we close the faucet? It can be a source of foreign bodies, bacteria, and viruses entering our network,” Montero explained.

“When you have a potable water supply what you try to is to avoid bacteriological risks. That if they occur they are acute and generalized. There is information from developed countries that had thousands of boarding schools by diarrhea and that cost many deaths. I’m not talking about prehistory, I’m talking about 15 or 20 years ago. So it seems to us a value to preserve” .

The interpellation of this Wednesday was called by the senator Enrique Rubio from the Frente Amplio so that the authorities of OSE, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Public Health provide explanations on the management of the water deficit. The most controversial measure was to increase the salinity limit in the water distributed by OSE, from 200 mg/L to 400 mg/L sodium, and 250 mg/L to 700 mg/L chloride.

OSE requested this change from Public Health because the dam that normally supplies Montevideo and Canelones, Paso Severino, It now has 10% of its maximum flow. Therefore, the state company resorted to obtaining water under the Aguas Corrientes damwhich is in direct contact with the Río de la Plata from where the saltiest water comes.
