Oscar Villegas couldn’t have had a better debut at the head of the Bolivian national football team. It was a victory and a landslide (4-0) over Venezuela, on Thursday afternoon, at the Municipal Stadium of Villa Ingenio, in the city of El Alto.
The match corresponded to the seventh date of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers and It is the second victory for the Verde in this competition, The previous one was against Peru, when Antonio Carlos Zago was the coach of Bolivia.
“It was important to start with a victory“It was important that the people who came leave happy. We are proud and tomorrow we will think about Chile,” said Villegas at the press conference after the meeting.
He also referred to the fact that the stadium Villa Ingenio de El Alto hosted an official national team match for the first time.
“When we talked about playing here (in El Alto) we said that the priority was the playing field, the conditions it gave us to develop football. and if we were a few meters higher it was welcome. We want to play on good fields and be competitive,” he added.
Villegas called up several young players for this double date of Qualifiers and two of them had the chance to debut: Luis Paz from Bolívar and Enzo Monteiro from Santos of Brazil, the latter scored the fourth goal for the Verde against the Vinotinto.
“A lot of things were said about the players, I trust them, and I will continue to do so. “As long as I see that there are people who can respond,” said the coach.
The victory allowed Bolivia to place itself in the play-off zone in the standings, as after seven games they have six points and are in seventh position.
“I am proud of the performance of my players,” Villegas said, adding that from this Friday onwards, the focus will be exclusively on Chile, the Verde’s next rival on Tuesday in the city of Santiago.
