Carlos Espá: “The State is hard with those it works with and soft with criminal organizations”
In a recent interview with Perú21, Carlos Espá pointed out that he is an “austere candidate.” “We are going step by step. And we continue to move forward. We are always saying that, if we want to be an austere president, we have to be an austere candidate. If we want to be an all-terrain president, we have to be an all-terrain candidate. And if we want to be an honest president, we have to be an honest candidate,” he said.
Furthermore, he pointed out that the fight against corruption must be directed at the leaders of criminal organizations and not against the little thief on the street.
“In Peru, the hard hand is applied to the honest worker, the merchant, the taxi driver, the motorcycle taxi driver. And the soft hand is applied to the leader of criminal organizations. It has to be the opposite. The soft hand must be applied to the honest worker to make the State adapt and thus promote formalization. Peru is becoming increasingly more informal. We are becoming more and more informal,” he added.
