The dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo will reform Law 185, the Labor Code, to include Nicaraguan Mother’s Day as a mandatory national holiday with the right to rest and salary. In 2018, the “Mother of all marches” was registered on that day to demand justice for the victims of the regime’s repression.
The reform will be for article 66 of the Labor Code that establishes: «The following are mandatory national holidays with the right to rest and salary: January First, Holy Thursday and Friday, May First, July 19, Fourteen and Fifteen of September, Eighth and Twenty-fifth of December».

Before the reform that will be made to this article, May 30, Mother’s Day, was declared a paid holiday for the state sector by decision of the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship. “The Executive Branch may declare days off with pay or on account of vacations, both at the national and municipal levels,” says the closing of that article.
«An initiative of Law that has been sent to us by the president of the National Assembly, Dr. Gustavo Porras, to reform article 66 of the Labor Code and include May 30, Mother’s Day, in the list of national holidays. This is a preliminary project that is going to be submitted for approval in the National Assembly,” the spokeswoman for the dictatorship, Rosario Murillo, reported this afternoon.
In 2018, when the country was experiencing a civic revolution and they demanded the departure of the dictatorial couple, a series of popular marches were registered that triggered the order “let’s go with everything”, a decision by the regime that culminated in the death of 355 people, according to report of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).
