Ortega rejects Russia’s expulsion at the UN Human Rights Council

The government of Daniel Ortega rejected the expulsion of Russia from the UN Human Rights Council, omitting the complaints attributed to this nation for the war in Ukraine.

In a letter issued on Friday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ortega government expressed as a member of the United Nations it will continue to insist on dialogues “based on respect for the principle of equal rights.”

On the other hand, it mentions that “excluding or suspending the participation of countries and governments from the UN constitutes a violation of human rights and an aggression against their peoples.”

“We have condemned, and will continue to condemn, all forms and modalities of conflagration, being clear that peace and dialogue are the only ways to truly promote the life that we all deserve,” indicates part of the statement.

Nicaragua is one of the few countries allied to Russia in Latin America, like Cuba Venezuela. On April 7, Russia was suspended from the UN Human Rights Council for invading Ukraine.

Of the 193 members of the assembly, 93 voted in favor, 24 against and 58 abstained. From the region, Bolivia, Cuba and Nicaragua voted against and abstained: Brazil, El Salvador, Mexico.

President Daniel Ortega’s position of support for Russian President Vladimir Putin could bring serious consequences to Nicaragua, after the sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on Moscow for the invasion of Ukraine, economists and analysts warn.

In an interview last voice of americathe Economist Enrique Saenz He said that Nicaragua depends to a large extent on the United States and is the main country where its exports go, adding that Russia, on the other hand, does not even stand out in the main figures of the Central Bank of Nicaragua in terms of sending remittances.

“Numerous remittances originated from the work of Nicaraguans in the United States. How many remittances came from Russia? Zero, but in addition, the main external financing that the Ortega government received came from multilateral financial institutions, the IMF, the BIP, the World Bank, in which the United States is the main partner,” explained Sáenz.
