With 74 votes in favor, zero against and 16 abstentions, the steamroller of Ortega deputies and their allies in the National Assembly canceled this Wednesday, June 15, the legal personality of 93 non-profit organizations.
The initiative for the decree was presented on June 10 by the Sandinista deputy Filiberto Rodríguez, in charge of championing the “annihilation” of this new batch.

The onslaught of the Daniel Ortega dictatorship, through the Ministry of the Interior, took its way to the Nicaraguan Writers Center (CNE), founded by the late priest and poet Ernesto Cardenal (1925-2020).
The CNE, created on April 5, 1990, has a publishing house that, with the support of the cooperation of Norwegian writers, managed to publish 81 poetry titles, 39 short stories, 24 novels and three plays, for a total of 147 titles.
With these new 93 non-profit associations, the canceled NGOs rise to 550, not including the 98 that Ortega and Murillo ordered to behead on June 10.
Regime accuses NGOs of “breaching duties and obligations”
In the new list of canceled organizations, there are associations that promote education, art, culture, defense of the environment, the eradication of sexist violence or community development.
According to the Nicaraguan government, these 93 NGOs have failed to comply with their duties and obligations established in the legislation that regulates them, “hindering the control and surveillance of the General Directorate of Registration and Control of Organizations that are For-Profit of the Ministry of the Interior.”

In Nicaragua, with the vote of the Sandinista deputies and their allies, who are the majority in Parliament, the legal personality of more than 500 NGOs has been canceled since December 2018, including 33 foreign organizations.
Once the organizations have been outlawed, the Department of Non-Profit Civil Associations of the Ministry of the Interior must proceed to cancel the respective registration of each of these associations within a period not exceeding 72 hours.
Once this step is completed, it adds that “the goods and shares that belong to the associations, will have, after liquidation, the destination foreseen in the constitutive act or in its statute. If nothing has been arranged in this regard, these will become the property of the State in accordance with the Law of the matter.
In the next few days, the Ortega dictatorship would be canceled to another 98 NGOs, with which it would add 191 in less than a month. Human rights organizations, such as the Human Rights Collective Never Again, have condemned Ortega’s repeated actions against non-governmental organizations.
