“Ortega must be forced” to comply with the OAS resolution, says expert

"Ortega must be forced" to comply with the OAS resolution, says expert

The lawyer and member of the political council of the Blue and White National Unity (Unab) Juan Diego Barberena explained to Article 66 that the Nicaraguan regime must abide by the provisions of the resolution of the last General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) on “The political and human rights crisis in Nicaragua.”

With 32 votes in favor, the continental body called on Friday, October 7, the dictator Daniel Ortega to grant full and unhindered access to his territory to international human rights organizations in a spirit of transparency and accountability, as well as such as the demand for the freedom of political prisoners and respect for the right to religious freedom.

Faced with this new action by the OAS and knowing that the Sandinista government denounced the Inter-American Charter and took over the organization’s offices, Barberena stated that “Nicaragua remains legally bound and must comply with its international obligations.”

“The OAS continues to correctly approach and deal with the Nicaraguan issue and the resolution of the last General Assembly is directed in that direction; therefore, it must comply with international obligations and, as a consequence, it must open the way to a democratic situation in which fundamental rights are fully enforced, the release of political prisoners, religious freedom, and interaction with the international community”, he added.

However, he pointed out that the reality is that in addition to Ortega formally denouncing the Face of the OAS and illegally taking over its offices, he also broke diplomatic relations with the Netherlands, expelled the European Union ambassador and has denied entry to the ambassador. of the United States Hugo Rodríguez, “which means that Ortega continues to increase his policy of international isolation and that in his semantics it is the only way they can continue to stay in power.”

“Ortega must be forced to comply”

Regarding the demand that a delegation from the international community be allowed to enter to address the situation in the country, the expert asserted that it will not be carried out and will not materialize due to the will of Daniel Ortega.

“Ortega must be forced to carry it out and that forcing implies greater international isolation, but not only with formal resolutions that what they establish are declarations of condemnation, but with more coercive actions and this implies bilateral sanctions to the source of enrichment of the dictatorship».

He also insisted on the application of “more robust” sanctions established by the Inter-American Democratic Charter within the framework of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States.

“The declaration is very good, however it is necessary to force Ortega to comply with the resolution, because we are facing a behavior that is not of good will on the part of the State, and since it does not act as such, it must be forced,” Barberena stressed.

“New OAS resolution will not materialize due to Ortega’s will,” says expert

On the other hand, he stressed that in terms of the immediate effects that the resolution may have, it may have a symbolic meaning due to the refusal of the Ortega regime, “however, from a perspective of generating support for subsequent diplomatic actions in the framework of a sanctions strategy that can force the Ortega regime, this resolution is very important».

Finally, he indicated that in the face of the constant call to Ortega to respect democratic freedoms and that he has refused to comply, now what would remain in the OAS’ maro is apply Article 21 of the Inter-American Charter within multilateral actions to pressure his regime.

In 2019, the OAS had already created a first commission whose objective was to carry out diplomatic efforts in order to seek a peaceful and effective solution to the political and social crisis that broke out in April 2018 in Nicaragua, however, the regime prevented its income, and in this 2022, rather the repression has increased.
