Ortega judges and prison directors would lead the “new package” of EU sanctions

Spanish poet and journalist Daniel Rodríguez Moya insisted to MEPs on the need to designate sanctions against Nicaraguan judges who have sentenced political prisoners in the Central American country. The request was made at a meeting held at the headquarters of the European Parliament prior to the presentation of his documentary “Nicaragua, homeland free to live”, within the framework of the fourth anniversary of the massacre of May 30, 2018.

«Human rights violators are not only dictators; but also those who carry out their orders and must respond to the Justice for it at the time,” Rodríguez said during the event and that, in the meantime, “they must be sanctioned as forcefully as possible.”

In a meeting with the MEP of the Socialists and Democrats group, Ignacio Sánchez Amor, coordinator of Human Rights, Rodríguez Moya highlighted the importance of the sanctions of the European Union “at a level of the regime (of Nicaragua) that cannot enjoy impunity as they are accomplices direct and necessary elements in the violation of human rights.

The MEP explained that they are working on a “new package” of sanctions for officials of the Ortega-Murillo regime, which could include Sandinista judges and directors of prisons throughout the country. The Spaniard reminded the April Mothers who continue to seek justice for the murders of their children, the prisoners of conscience who add up to more than 180 detainees.

The European parliamentarians Ignacio Sánchez Amor, Alicia Homs and Mónica Silvana have shown Europe’s commitment to the fight for democracy in Nicaragua and have opted to continue along the lines of individual sanctions. Sánchez recognized that “from the left it took us a while to realize what was happening in Nicaragua despite the signs that there were.”

The sanctions proposal

On May 10, three members of the European Parliament proposed that 14 judges of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ) of Nicaragua, at the service of the Ortega-Murillo dictatorship, be included in the list of those next sanctioned by the European Union.

The initiative is led by MEPs Soraya Rodríguez, Javier Nart and Jordi Cañas. They allege that this group should be sanctioned by the European Union (EU) for prosecuting, convicting and sentencing hundreds of political prisoners since the beginning of the social protests in April 2018.
