The Group of Experts on Human Rights (GEDH) of the United Nations Organization compared the Nicaraguan regime with Nazi Germany.
Jan Simon, a researcher and independent expert, stressed that the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, in addition to having committed crimes against humanity since the repression of April 2018, has carried out methods comparable to those used by the German dictator Adolf Hitler.

The specialist in international criminal law said at a press conference, within the framework of the 52nd regular session on human rights at the United Nations Organization, that the arming of the justice system against political opponents as is done in Nicaragua is exactly what What did the Nazi regime do?
«Obviously the parallels are in the 30-40 years of the last century; Unfortunately, all the elements in the case of Nicaragua can be seen in the Nuremberg trials (…) and very particularly the so-called case of justice. The case of Nicaragua is very serious, which has not been seen in Central America for a long time,” the expert remarked.
For his part, the lawyer and member of the political council of the Blue and White National Unity (Unab), Juan Diego Barberena, explained that the comparison of the UN experts is due to the fact that the Nuremberg tribunal was constituted to know the processes criminal proceedings against persons implicated in crimes committed in Nazi Germany.
He indicated that with respect to Nicaragua, the Ortega justice system chose specific courts and tribunals to hear the crimes charged to the people prosecuted in the context of the political crisis in Nicaragua.
“In such a way that de facto Nicaragua established a special qualification for the heads of the courts, where there were a series of violations of the procedural guarantees in the sense that all of them—the political prisoners—were removed from their natural judges and tried by incompetent courts that became, in fact, exceptional courts, which is the main element comparable to the Nuremberg tribunals,” explained the expert.
Referring to the comparison of the Nuremberg tribunals with those of Nicaragua, Barberena said that both have different purposes, because “some were to establish the responsibilities of those who were involved in a series of crimes against humanity, but in Nicaragua they are de facto courts that the Ortega and Murillo dictatorship has set up as accepting courts to punish opponents.”

Likewise, he emphasized that the fact that the group of experts has recommended to the different cooperation agencies that they condition disbursements to the Nicaraguan dictatorship, “sets a precedent due to the seriousness of human rights violations,” since it affects in the international community in these almost five years of crisis in the country.
Despite the widespread accusations at the UN against Ortega, the Nicaraguan regime pointed out through the Attorney General of the Republic, Wendy Morales, that the experts’ report is partial and biased.
