Ortega has taken away almost 30 university study options from young people

Between December 13, 2021 and May 18, 2023, Nicaraguan youth have lost around 30 options to choose higher education centers, due to the arbitrary cancellation of the houses of study by the Sandinista regime.

The disarticulation of university options began in December 2021, when the legal personality of the Hispano-American University (UHISPAM) was canceled by the deputies of the National Assembly under the control of the dictator Daniel Ortega.

The Sandinista guillotine even beheaded the Superior Council of Private Universities (COSUP), which brought together 14 private universities.

It continued in 2022 with the cancellation, confiscation and alteration of the status of at least 22 university organizations, including the former and private Polytechnic University of Nicaragua, UPOLI, a rebel stronghold of the 2018 social protests.

Then they continued with the annulment and confiscation of assets from the Popular University of Nicaragua, the University of Humanist Studies, Paulo Freyre University and others.

In the destruction of the university fabric, the regime annulled the regional independence of the Bluefields Indian and Caribbean University (BICU) and the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast (URACCAN).

At the same time, he expelled the Central American University (UCA) from the state budget and from the National Council of Universities, always leaving behind the confiscation of that house of studies that belongs to the Society of Jesus.

In its war against the Catholic Church, its symbols, institutions and characters, the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo have been merciless against Catholic and religious universities.

The Juan Pablo II University, the Catholic University of the Dry Tropics, the Autonomous Christian University of Nicaragua and the Adventist University of Nicaragua have fallen under the annulment of the regime.

The regime, through the Ministry of the Interior, has also canceled seven university associations of foreign origin that at the time managed funds for local universities in Nicaragua.

In all cases, the dictatorship argues that the study houses are not accredited in the quality indicators, that they did not report their financial statements and their boards of directors, and they did not present clarifications about the patrimony, fixed assets, income, expenses, execution of funds, or unjustified increases and decreases in accounts.

After being annulled, they order the confiscation of their movable and immovable property in favor of the State and under the control of the National Council of Universities (CNU), a party body of the Sandinista Front to control higher education.

The Ministry of the Interior, the entity in charge of cancellations, has then ordered the authorities of the intervened universities to deliver to the CNU in an expeditious and orderly manner the information on students, teachers, careers, study plans, enrollment databases, and grades. or academic record.

The CNU then proceeds to relocate the students from the canceled universities to education centers under Sandinista control.

The Office of the Attorney General of the Republic, after the confiscations, is in charge of carrying out the transfer of the movable and immovable property of the affected study centers on behalf of the State of Nicaragua.

The last university canceled due to the dissolution of its partners was the Immaculate Conception Catholic University of the Archdiocese of Managua (UCICAM), according to a ministerial agreement published this Thursday in La Gaceta.

The disappearance of this university, which was granted its legal personality on June 25, 2012, was a decision of its members, but that does not save it from the confiscation of its assets.

The publication of La Gaceta indicates that since 2015 that study house had failed to comply with its legal obligations by not reporting its financial statements and board of directors. This means that, although its closure was the decision of its partners, its assets will administratively pass to the State for failing to comply with the rules.

With the closure of UCICAM, the number of public and private universities in Nicaragua is 27 centers, the majority state with branches throughout the country, some private with Sandinista capital such as the American University and the University of Managua.
