The Government of Nicaragua “emphatically condemned the coup attempt” this Sunday in Brazil by hundreds of radical followers of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who invaded the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive, and the Supreme Court, after breaking into the National Congress.
“The Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of the Republic of Nicaragua, on behalf of the Nicaraguan people and families, emphatically condemn the attempted coup that was launched this afternoon in Brazil against the recently elected legitimate government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,” Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega said in a statement.
In his message, Ortega added that “from this blessed and always free Nicaragua, we speak out against the coup terrorism that has once again manifested itself against progressive movements, parties and leaders that represent the interests and rights of the peoples.”

“Democracy and liberties belong to the peoples and the coup that has been unsuccessfully trying to usurp the inviolable rights of the peoples, will once again be buried by ignorance and popular contempt for the vile selfishness that drives ambitions, and behaviors criminal and unconstitutional that do not prevail”, he added.
Ortega, who signed the statement along with his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, sent his hug “to the Brazilian people, to Lula, President, in solidarity and invariable commitment to the indispensable defense of the just struggles and new realities of Brazil.”
“With the respect that we know each other, we say and we are sure that fascism, terrorism, the coup will not happen. Forward, always beyond, for justice and peace ”, he concluded.
After about four and a half hours, the security forces managed to regain control of the headquarters of the three powers, after containing the protesters with tear gas and riot gear.
The radical Bolsonaristas do not recognize the victory at the polls of Lula, who in the second round of October 30 won with 50.9% of the valid votes compared to 49.1% for Bolsonaro.
