Ortega dismisses Sandino’s daughter and says that the enemy remains the same

The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, affirmed this Monday that “the enemy remains the same”, in reference to the United States, during his farewell to the coffin of Blanca Sandino Aráuz, the only daughter of Augusto C. Sandino (1895-1934 ).

Sandino is considered Nicaragua’s greatest hero for his fight against a US occupation and for inspiring the 1979 revolution.

“The enemy continues to be the same,” said Ortega, after pointing out that “Washington, seat of government of the Yankee empire,” announced in December 1932 that its military would leave Nicaragua in January 1933, after Sandino’s rebellion.

Sandino Aráuz died on the 23rd at the age of 89 in the Military Hospital of Nicaragua, according to official information.

Ortega, a declared adversary of the United States, affirmed that Sandino Aráuz and his mother, Blanca Aráuz (1909-1933), will continue to “inspire the struggle of our people (…) giving Nicaraguans the right to defend peace and stability and security, which is the highest goal that the people can defend.”

The Nicaraguan president, the top leader of Sandinismo, has insisted on blaming the United States for the massive protests against his government in 2018, which he interpreted as a “failed coup.”

The protests left, according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), at least 355 dead, of which the Ortega government has recognized 200.
