Ortega dictatorship prevents Nicaraguan journalist Tifani Roberts from entering the country

The regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo denied entry to the country to the Nicaraguan journalist Tifani Roberts, who intended to arrive on June 11, with the aim of visiting her family, whom she had not visited for more than a year.

Roberts, who works for the Univisión network, told the newspaper La Prensa that he met all the requirements to be able to travel to Nicaragua and visit his mother and sister in the city of Granada, which were validated on June 9 by the airline Avianca, who in turn informed him that they would share the information with the Nicaraguan authorities for authorization.

However, it was the same airline that informed him, via email, that the government of Daniel Ortega rejected the proof of the COVID-19 and did not authorize their entry to Nicaraguan soil; Avianca in turn informed him that he would not be allowed to board the plane.

The journalist said that all this happened despite having met all the immigration requirements, in addition to sending an email to the Ministry of the Interior, where she referred to the reason for her trip, which was for a family visit and not work.

Ortega uses Avianca to deny journalist Tifani Roberts entry to Nicaragua

“That email that I send to the Ministry of the Interior is similar to the information that one fills out on the migration paper when you enter the country (…) I explain that it is a merely family view, I even specified that I am not going to work, that I am going to see my mom, I haven’t seen her for a year, I explained all that in an email. In addition to all the information, passport copy, the address of your destination and other details,” Roberts told the news outlet.

Regime uses airline to notify you that you could not travel

Among the Univisión reporter’s questions, is that the Ortega regime never informed her that she could not travel to Nicaragua, but used Avianca to be the one to notify that she cannot do so.

«I have traveled throughout Latin America during the pandemic and what the airline does is that it simply sends you the link, but you do all your immigration procedures directly with the country you are going to go to. But in this case it is Avianca who notifies me, Avianca has become the messenger of the Government of Nicaragua,” Roberts told the press.

Although Tifani Roberts has requested that the ticket money be returned, she denounces that the airline has refused to return it, arguing that “they are not responsible” for her not being able to board the plane. Faced with this situation, the communicator reported Avianca to the Federal Aviation Administration, because her human rights are being violated.

Article 66 tried to communicate with the journalist, however she did not answer the phone calls or text messages. Roberts, who has dual nationality (American and Nicaraguan), covered the social protests of 2018 and did journalistic work in 2021, which was the last time he managed to enter Nicaragua.
