The Government of Nicaragua, through the Ministry of the Interior, canceled this Monday the registrations and perpetual numbers of nine non-profit NGOs from the United States, Italy and Mexico, after accusing them of hindering internal controls and of not having registered as “ foreign agents”.

Of those nine foreign NGOs that operated in Nicaragua, six are from the US, two from Italy, and one from Mexico, according to a resolution of the Ministry of the Interior published in the Official Gazette.

Outlawed US NGOs are Engineering World Health, Friends of the Americas, Giving for Living International INC, Research Triangle Institute, Awana International, and The Fyera Foundation. The Fyera Foundation).

NGO FOR NOT REGISTERING AS “FOREIGN AGENTS”

According to the Government of President Daniel Ortega, these nine NGOs failed to comply with their obligations under the laws that regulate them by not registering as foreign agents, being obligated subjects.

The canceled NGOs were dedicated to cooperating in poor and remote areas in the fields of poverty, health, education, community development, among others.

The Executive had canceled the records and perpetual numbers of 18 European NGOs, 14 US NGOs and one Costa Rican NGO, bringing the number of foreign organizations outlawed in Nicaragua to 42.

In Nicaragua, with the vote of the Sandinista deputies and their allies, who are the majority in Parliament, the legal personality of at least 466 NGOs has been canceled since December 2018, including 42 foreign organizations.

Nicaragua has been going through a political and social crisis since April 2018, which has left hundreds dead in popular protests branded an attempted coup by Ortega, who has been in power for 15 years and five consecutive months amid allegations of authoritarianism and fraud. electoral.
