Ortega dictatorship closes Radio Darío de León after 73 years of existence

The dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo once again attacked Radio Darío, in León, as reported this Friday, August 12, by journalist Aníbal Toruño, owner of the radio station.

“Neither turning off equipment nor arbitrarily withdrawing a license will succeed in silencing us or silencing the truth. After 73 years, Radio Darío is and will be a voice that defends justice, democracy and citizen rights. Far from intimidating us, their actions strengthen us,” Toruño wrote on Twitter.

The last attack against the independent media outlet was on January 6, 2021, when the Police at the service of the Nicaraguan regime besieged the radio station.

In a previous interview with Aníbal Toruño, he denounced before Article 66 that it was the 90th time that Ortega ordered his repressive apparatus to besiege the facilities of his station, which in 2018 was reduced to ashes by a mob paid and transported by the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), according to complaints from the radio staff.

The León station is one of the few independent radio media outlets that continue to resist the onslaught of the Sandinista government and report on the crisis the country is going through.

The new attack and censorship of Radio Darío occurs when the Ortega regime has intensified its siege and repression against the independent press, closing more than 20 local media outlets. Among them is the confiscation of the newspaper La Prensa, Confidencial, 100% Noticias, Trinchera de la Noticia. It should be noted that Ortega has exerted economic pressure against television channels 10 and 12 and the radio station Radio Corporación.

On the other hand, at least 120 Nicaraguan journalists have decided to go into exile since April 2018, mainly to Costa Rica, the United States and Spain. Two journalists (Miguel Mora and Miguel Mendoza) and executives of the newspaper La Prensa are also behind bars.
