The president of Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega, addressed his country on national television on the night of this Thursday, February 9, after the release and exile to the United States of 222 political prisoners.
He denied that the release was due to the intervention of the United States government: “There has been no negotiation here, let it be clear.”
At the same time, the president asserted that after the release measure, “nor we are asking that sanctions be lifted, we are not asking for anything in return, it is a matter of dignity, patriotism, and that they take away their mercenaries.
assured that Monsignor Rolando Jose AlvarezBishop of Matagalpa, was transferred to La Modelo prison after refusing to board the plane to be exiled to the United States along with the other 222 political prisoners.
“I have not known the story of a prisoner who had been treated in the same way as this gentleman has been treated. Now he is in the Modelo prison, ”he said. For Ortega, the prelate is “unhinged.”
In his opinion, the attitude of the bishop, detained since August 2022, is wrong because the release of political prisoners is a State decision.
“I don’t know what this man thinks. He said that he does not abide by a resolution of a Court of Justice and that he wants to meet with the bishops, ”said Ortega.
The Nicaraguan ruler indicated that the list of political prisoners who would be exiled to the United States was 228: “We do not exclude anyone.” He expressed that four would not be welcomed abroad and others did not want to travel.
He said that the idea of the release came from his wife, Rosario Murillo, who would have suggested offering the plan to the Embassy of the United States, the country that finally received the detainees in Washington.
“This sovereign decision of the Nicaraguan State has been made in the supreme interest of our country, to live in harmony, to live working and prospering from peace,” he emphasized.
In the address this Thursday, Ortega called for a constitutional reform to declare Murillo “co-president” of Nicaragua.
