The Government of Daniel Ortega congratulated this Thursday the leader of the Georgian separatist region of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, on the anniversary of his “independence.”
“On the special occasion of commemorating the 29th anniversary of independence, this coming September 30, we are proud to express, on behalf of the people and Government of Reconciliation and National Unity of the Republic of Nicaragua, and on our own behalf, our most sincere congratulations to you, your government and the brotherly people of the Republic of Abkhazia,” Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega wrote to Bzhania.
In his message, the Sandinista leader made reference to the sovereignty of Abkhazia and reiterated his commitment to friendship.
“On this memorable and historic date, we recognize the courage of the Abkhaz people, who fully exercise their sacred right to self-determination, national sovereignty and independence,” said Ortega, who signed the letter with his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo.

Nicaragua is part of a group of countries, along with Venezuela and the small island states of Nauru and Tuvalu, that support Russia in recognizing the independence of the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Abkhazia became independent from Georgia in the same process as South Ossetia, in 2008.
