The Daniel Ortega regime appointed the Italian diplomat, a Nicaraguan national, Maurizio Carlo Alberto Gellias extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Nicaragua before the Government of the Principality of Andorra, as concurrent, with headquarters in the Kingdom of Spain.
The appointment was made effective through presidential agreement number 02-2023, published this Tuesday, June 27, in La Gaceta, Nicaragua’s official newspaper.
According to article two of the agreement, it takes effect from this date. “Put it to the attention of the National Assembly for its due ratification,” says .
At the end of November 2022, the Ortega dictatorship removed Gelli as ambassador to Canada to send him as Nicaragua’s diplomatic representative in Spain. With this new position, the Ortega administration gives this shady subject more power.
Son of an Italian mobster
As for the origin of Maurizio Gelli, it is known that he is the son of Licio Gelli, former leader of the masonic logic Propaganda Due (P2), who is accused of relations with the mafia and Cosa Nostra, the bankruptcy of Banco Ambrosiano, anti-communist agent during the Cold War, conspiracy work during the eighties in Argentina and financial scandals in Uruguay.
Licio Gelli passed away in 2015 at the age of 96. According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, Maurizio Gelli tried to launder the illegal fortune of 1.2 billion dollars accumulated by his father.

Before being Nicaragua’s ambassador to Canada, Gelli was Nicaragua’s ambassador to Uruguay for four years. He took office in 2013, during the government of José Mujica.
Gelli’s first appointment was questioned by sectors of the Nicaraguan opposition who claimed his Italian nationality and recalled his involvement in illegal work with his father’s fortune. The Italian was nationalized Nicaraguan, according to resolution 2458, published in La Gaceta on May 11, 2009.
