Ortega appoints two new representatives in the Commission of Free Zones

The Nicaraguan president, Daniel Ortega, this morning appointed Roberto Benjamín Belliquard Elizondo and the Korean businessman Min Chul Kwon as members of the National Commission of Free Zones, after leaving out the two representatives of the Superior Council of Private Enterprise (Cosep) .

Through presidential agreement number 162-2022 published in La Gaceta on Monday, November 14, the regime established that the owner of the industrial park and the Confexsa textile company, Roberto Benjamín Belliquard, and the director of the Korean textile company be appointed. SAE-A Technotex.

The amendment to the Export Free Zones Law was approved by the National Assembly with 79 votes in favor on Wednesday, November 9.

The document indicated in article 11, which refers to the administration of the Corporation of Free Zones, that it will be directed by a Board of Directors and will be made up of senior officials from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce and the director or executive director of the Corporation, who will be appointed by Daniel Ortega.

With the modification to this article, the regime removed Cosep, which had two seats within the commission. The representatives of the business union were proposed by the organization and appointed by Ortega; however, since April 2018, with the social outbreak, Cosep did not participate in the work sessions.

Likewise, article 22, which is related to the members of the National Commission of Free Zones of Nicaragua, was reformed and now the institution will have the head of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit, the Ministry of Development, Industry and Commerce, the Ministry of Labor, the Executive Director of Free Zones, two representatives of companies that operate under the free zone regime and their respective alternates.

The regime argued that the reform will strengthen the organic structure of the Corporation of Free Zones, seeking efficient coordination between the different instances of the State of Nicaragua and the national and international private sector.
