The mayor of Canelones and presidential candidate, Yamandú Orsi, expressed criticism of the announcement made last Friday by President Luis Lacalle Pou, with which, together with the Uruguayan sculptor Pablo Atchugarry, they unleashed the controversy: that the eagle of the Graf Spee would be transformed in a dove of peace.
This initiative was eventually scrapped due to the negative reviews it received, and ended with Atchugarry showing outrage and announcing that he would go ahead with the project of a dove-shaped statue, symbolizing peace, but that he would take it to another country.
In the celebration of June 19 in Sauce de Canelones, Orsi was consulted by the press regarding this failed attempt at a statue, which he described as
. Orsi added that he was tempted to respond as a “History teacher”, but that from a political point of view the “excess of announcements” made them “fall into those errors” or “distract on issues that should really matter”.

The leftist leader understands that this type of situation distracts from the real problems, such as his absence in the reparation act for the murder of the girls of april (and the disappearance of Luis Eduardo González and Eduardo Tassino) during the dictatorship. “We come from very heartfelt days, it would have been very good if the president had been present at the act that took place in the Legislative Palace of reparation. If we add this other to that, it generates more confusion than certainty, but I am glad that it has been corrected,” he said.
I don’t know if there was an intention (to divert attention elsewhere), but it generated another noise. There are many issues that are not so important and that distract attention from the issue of water, from complying with the mandates of international organizations. I think they were priorities. This does not add much, I share the peace. But you have to be very careful with excessive advertisements”, specified the mayor of Canelones and leader of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP).
