The president-elect shared details of the meeting on his account on the social network X, where he expressed: “It is an honor to have visited President @LulaOficial. Pleasant exchange on the global and regional agenda that directly impacts work and production. Brazil and its economy are very important for the development of our country. Thank you for having me.”
The meeting, originally scheduled for Thursday, was rescheduled for noon on Friday, at which time both leaders discussed issues related to Mercosur and regional integration. In previous statements, Orsi had indicated that the regional bloc and bilateral issues would be key points in the conversation, highlighting that “the Mercosur issue will always be there,” along with aspects related to navigability and ports.
Orsi emphasized that the topics discussed do not respond only to the interests of current governments, but also to the country’s strategic needs. “The relationship with Brazil has been very good in recent years and the country’s need, not so much the current president’s or mine, but the country needs to energize some decisions that have already been made,” he expressed.
The president-elect also reaffirmed the orientation that his foreign policy will have: “Foreign policy is Uruguayan, and yes or yes it has to be in harmony with the region. There we are talking about Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. It is not that you align yourself with the politics of others, but we have to play the best game for Uruguay.”
The day also includes a meeting with the Uruguayan ambassador in Brazil and technical meetings with Brazilian specialists in strategic areas, in line with the intention of strengthening cooperation between both countries.
