This week, Uruguayan politics received a new twist with the Charles Carrera resigns from his seat in the SenateThe decision has been welcomed and supported by the presidential candidate of the Frente Amplio, Yamandú Orsiwho believes that it is essential now to allow justice to act without interference in its processes.
On Wednesday, Orsi met with the Archbishop of Montevideo, Cardinal Daniel Sturla, in the Archdiocese of Montevideo. After the meeting, Orsi spoke to the media about the Carrera’s resignationstating his full agreement with his colleague’s decision. He expressed that he considers it important that democratic institutions function without obstacles in the country.
Orsi stresses trust in democratic institutions
In his statements, Orsi stressed his confidence in the Uruguayan judicial system, emphasizing that the Attorney General’s Office has made a decision and that he prefers not to comment on its course of action. “I believe that Uruguay continues to have a Justice system that guarantees us all a democratic and republican life as it should be,” he stressed, firmly convinced of the crucial role that institutions play in maintaining democracy.
The discussion also focused on Carrera’s continuity on list 609, about which Orsi was consulted. He mentioned that as long as there is no judicial ruling that prevents it, Carrera’s freedom to remain part of the list is essential. Orsi’s personal and professional bond with Carrera reaffirms his support: “He is a colleague with whom I have spent a lot of time and of course I have the best of opinions.”
Separation between the case and the electoral campaign
The Frente Amplio campaign, according to Orsi, should not be negatively affected by recent eventsFrom his perspective, the fact that Carrera has not made use of his privileges and has chosen to appear before the courts voluntarily is an action that strengthens the party in the long term. Orsi stressed that Carrera, by respecting the legal procedure, contributes to strengthening the values of the Frente Amplio.
On the other hand, Carrera, in a press conference on the same Wednesday, expressed his disagreement with the interpretation of the Prosecutor’s Office. However, he stated that his responsibility as a citizen and political representative is to submit to the judicial process in order to offer the necessary explanations.
