In a recent event in Pando, Yamandu Orsipresidential candidate of Wide Frontexpressed his discontent with the current administration of the outgoing president, Luis Lacalle Pou, stating that Uruguayan citizens have “wasted five years” due to the inaction of the coalitionist executive. Orsi urged the militants to join forces, emphasizing the need to act responsibly so as not to disappoint the population.
Orsi stated that the period of time under the current government not only did not meet expectations of being the best years, but “absolutely nothing” significant happened. In his speech, he emphasized that it is crucial not to fail the people, recalling the previous achievements of the Wide Front such as the Ceibal Plan and the renewal of the energy matrix.
Fernando Pereira’s concerns about the economy and security
Fernando Pereira, president of the Frente Amplio, shared his concerns in an interview on M24, highlighting the country’s current challenges, especially in security and economy. According to Pereira, there has been an increase in insecurity that generates fear in the departmental capitals and a stagnation in purchasing power, with only 30,000 jobs created recently.
Citing the Institute of Economics of the University of the Republic, Pereira assured that purchasing power is frozen, affecting 95% of households. In addition, he mentioned problems with access to medicines in hospitals, exemplifying the creation of “stamps with non-existent medicines”, reflecting the difficulties faced by Uruguayans.
Pereira highlighted the loss of quality of life after “15 years of improvement”, referring to a setback in the last five years. Recent scandals, such as the cases of Alejandro Astesiano and Sebastián Marset, together with irregularities in the Ministry of Tourism, have increased citizen indignation, in an environment where the quality of life remains stagnant.
Looking to the future, Pereira stressed that the Frente Amplio has plans to solve current problems. He highlighted that his party has experience and an ideal team in economic, health and social areas, with strategies focused on stimulating growth and promoting a fair distribution policy.
Pereira defended the Frente Amplio program as “the most progressive proposal” in social security, advocating for a social dialogue that allows reform of the system and focusing on informal workers and vulnerable sectors. The intention is to improve the living conditions of the 500,000 people who live on less than 25,000 pesos.
