Organizations trust that the dictatorship that "subdues Nicaragua will end very soon"

The Nicaraguan Nunca Más Human Rights Collective and the Nicaraguan Association for Human Rights sent a message within the framework of the Christmas and New Year festivities, stating that they will continue to demand “justice, peace and freedom” in the face of the repression imposed by the Daniel regime Ortega.

«That for this new year 2023, the blessing of the child God be spilled, in each and every one of the homes of our compatriots and our friends around the world; bringing peace, freedom, democracy and full respect for human rights. Dictatorships, invariably, have an end and the hope is that the tyranny that subjugates Nicaragua will continue and fulfill this destiny very soon, “says the defense association.

For its part, the Human Rights Collective cited the words of Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, stressing that “hope overcomes despair, that they will not rob us of our strength, our inner energy, the tenacity to build a New Nicaragua, a change in our society, they will not rob us of our yearnings for peace, justice and freedom”.

The organizations have pointed out throughout the year that the regime intensified the repression against opponents, their families, independent journalists and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), as a result of the re-election of Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, in the 2021 general election.

According to the data presented by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), the repression exercised by Ortega since 2018 left a balance of 355 murders, currently accounting for 235 political prisoners who are held in subhuman prisons, without the right to health and where they suffer torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment; disrespect for international law, due process and the right to defense.

Various international organizations have also demanded that the dictatorship respect human rights and the calls from the United Nations (UN), Committee for the Elimination of Racism and Discrimination (CERD) and the International Covenant on Human Rights. Civil and Political, the same organizations with which Nicaragua has signed commitment treaties with human rights.

The international human rights organization Raza e Igualdad published on December 23 an account of the situation in the Central American country, counting “90 attacks on indigenous peoples of the northern Caribbean coast, which resulted in 32 murders. 26 attacks against national and international media that resulted in their closure. Likewise, 70,000 new Nicaraguan asylum applications were recorded in Costa Rica, and 147,000 Nicaraguans have reached the US border.
