Teachers’ unions point out that it is imperative that “society as a whole understands that the existence of a modern system of justice, based on the principles of sovereignty of the people, public liberties, free elections, respect for human rights, participation and equality of opportunity, is essential to guarantee a democratic education.”
Some 20 teachers’ organizations shared a statement on Thursday, September 19, in which they warn that students will go through a new school year marked by the repressive climate that exists in the country.
“The 2024-2025 school year will begin in a new political context for everyone: we are victims of arbitrariness and violations of human rights, and educators, trained in democracy, must strengthen the training of citizens for a coexistence that preserves the values and principles of a democratic state of rights and justice,” the statement reads.
The organizations point out that the disregard for the popular sovereignty expressed on July 28, being one of the democratic values that must be upheld, and the repression against citizens who demand that this result be respected by everyone, are evidence of “a State that contradicts what is established in the Constitution.”

Among the associations that signed the statement are: Civil Association of Retired and Pensioned Educators United of the State of Aragua, Association of Retired and Pensioned Educators United of the Capital Region, Union Coalition of the Teachers of the State of Yaracuy, Union Coalition of the Teachers of the State of Sucre, College of Teachers of the State of Yaracuy, Education Coordinator of VPA-Gremios, Union Coalition of Teachers of the State of Amazonas and Excubitus-Human Rights in Education.
“In other words, without democracy and respect for all these values, education for democracy is a dead letter and the practice of teaching will be seriously compromised, with students being the most affected by the current situation of massive violation of rights,” the letter states.
In the letter they point out that educators should promote free debate, the confrontation of ideas, respect for political diversity and toleranceas this will allow education to reflect the richness of society and train citizens to interact critically and constructively in the public sphere.
Teachers warn that education is threatened in its mission to form critical, autonomous citizens committed to building a fair and equitable society. “In this new scenario imposed on us by a State that violates human rights, it is essential to defend and strengthen democracy as the foundation on which a truly human education is built.”
