Opret starts Metro SDN extension this Thursday

Opret inicia este jueves extensión Metro SDN

The government decided today to start the extension of line 1 of the Santo Domingo Subway with two additional stations, one at the Ramón Matías Mella school and another 1.5 kilometers from that place due to the high demand of passengers in the area and the demand of more than one hundred community organizations.

The engineer Rafael Santos Perez, director of the Office for the Reorganization of Transport (OPRET) specifies that starting this Thursday the brigades will begin to mark the properties that will be affected by the work that will add more value to Santo domingo norte.

He maintained that by next week Opret would be negotiating with the owners of the buildings that will be affected by the intervention, so that by the beginning of next year the problem is resolved and the construction of the stations can begin immediately.

He argued that the second, of the two stations to be built, will be a large terminal where users can store their vehicles while boarding the Metro.

He pointed out that they began contacts with the mayor Carlos Guzmanchurches and community leaders, since in all works like that someone is always affected, although they are compensated as required by law, although the emotional part is priceless.

He affirmed that the extension of Line 1 of the Metro implies the viability of the Double Track that reaches the Ramón Matías Mella school to the road that leads to the municipal district of La Victoria, as well as the Villa Mella Punta road, where it is always corked, regardless of whether the hour is rush hour or not. Only last Tuesday, Line 1 of the Metro transported 165 thousand users and a similar amount on line 2, but yesterday the projection was more than 350 thousand on both lines.

He calculates that each of these stations would have a flow of passengers of around 5,000 per hour at peak times.

The director of Opret, Rafael Santos Pérez, denied that this office kite crashes against employees, as was revealed in a video uploaded to social networks by a Metro operator, who was already released by that body for investigation purposes. According to the young man’s complaint, OPRET is firing experienced drivers without paying him their employment benefits.

The Santo Domingo Metro train drivers gathered at the Casandra Damirón station to protest the alleged threats and massive dismissal after the driver made a complaint about the precariousness in which they work.

They alleged shortness of breath, poor bathroom conditions, among others.
