opposition organizations Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy (ACJD) Y Blue and White National Unit (UNAB) They condemned the recent illegal and arbitrary arrests of citizens and relatives of opponents belonging to the Unión Democrática Renovadora (Unamos) group by the regime of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo.
Through a statement published this Saturday, September 17, the Civic Alliance indicated that “this repressive escalation represents a sign of perversity that, by not finding the targets of their hunt (leaders), imprison members of their family environment”.
According to the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (Cenidh), the regime has imprisoned and harassed at least ten members of the political movement, as well as their relatives. He indicated that this is a new “unprecedented” repressive pattern because it uses the relatives of the opponents of Unamos as hostages to achieve the arrest of the leaders, most of whom are in exile.
The Civic Alliance pointed out that “this dictatorial regime intends to annul the struggle for freedom and democratic construction by flaunting its criminal nature.” Within the framework of the National Holidays, the political organization maintained that Daniel Ortega’s “state terrorism policy” “will not subdue the patriotism that every Nicaraguan carries within him.”

Unamos, formerly the Sandinista Renovation Movement (MRS) and currently part of the UNAB, “has historically been persecuted with cruelty by the Ortega-Murillo regime, which has resulted not only in its legal ban, but also in the imprisonment of its main leaders, condemned for the fact of exercising their rights”, indicated the National Unit.
The members of the UNAB remembered the death of their vice president, the retired general Hugo Torres Jimenezwho died as a political prisoner of Ortega, “as a result of the inhuman treatment to which he was subjected.”
These are “desperate actions by Ortega in the face of their inability to break the people’s resistance against them,” they added; while demanding the immediate release of all the kidnapped people.
