Opposition Taiwan sweeps local elections and Tsai resigns as PDP leader

Shanghai (China), Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), was the great winner of the local elections held this Saturday, a result that led the country’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, to announce her resignation as leader of the ruling Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

With the majority of the votes counted, the KMT took over the mayoralty in four of the six big cities in the country -among them, the capital, Taipei-, while the other two went to the hands of the PDP.

The referendum also held today to lower the legal age to vote and run for political office from 20 to 18 years did not go ahead, since it needed the favorable vote of more than half of the 19.1 million registered voters and only obtained the support of about 5.6 million.
