In 2019, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador summed up the situation of the opposition: “They have not been able to form, and we celebrate this – and I knock on wood so that it cannot be created – a group or a faction with the strength of the reactionaries of other times. Furthermore, I say this with respect, I do not want it to be understood as an act of arrogance or a mockery, it is what I am perceiving: They are morally defeated“, he accused.
In addition to the loss of public office, the opposition is also experiencing internal conflicts, which makes it difficult for them to have the unity and strength to lead a strong movement from the opposition.
At the beginning of López Obrador’s government, despite having more strength, they were unable to recover.
“It is a very delicate scenario. First, because of the internal divisions that the parties have, we know what just happened with the PRI on the issue of the national leadership, which is not renewed, Alejandro Moreno in this internal assembly that did not have a major contest, is reelected. And on the other hand, well, we will see what happens with the ruptures in the PAN as a result of the call for a renewal of leadership, that always generates intraparty conflicts,” Cruz Parcero adds.
Without agenda or leadership
As if the defeats and internal conflicts were not enough, the opposition has another problem: it has no agenda and no leadership.
Aldo Munoz Armenta, Professor at the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMex), believes that there is no generational change in the opposition, so the same old profiles will be seen in the opposition role.
“Unfortunately, they are the same, there is no generational renewal… if anything, in addition to the usual ones, there are leaders, let’s call them academics, such as Lorenzo Córdoba, Leonardo Valdés, Arturo Sánchez, Amado Avendaño,” he comments.
In past governments, there was a staunch opponent: Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Today, in the opposition parties, there is no profile similar to that of the former head of the Government of Mexico City and three-time presidential candidate, who with his criticisms achieved a response from the Executive.
