Opposition deputies and senators stayed overnight in the plenary of the House and Senate, at dawn on Wednesday (6), to maintain the occupation of the directors of the houses, making it impossible to resume legislative work. At 6 am today, parliamentarians took turns, leaving the night at the National Congress.
Parliamentarians, mostly from the Liberal Party (PL), protest against the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro, decreed on Monday (4). For parties of the ruling base, the action is illegal and would represent another January 8 in a new attack on the Institutions of the Republic.
General amnesty
The opposition requires that the general and unrestricted amnesty is based on those convicted of attempted coup d’état in the trial of the coup plot, and that the impeachment of the Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes.
Moraes is the rapporteur of the action against Bolsonaro, accused of leading an attempt to annul the 2022 presidential elections with pressure on military commanders. The complaint also points plans to murder and arrest public authorities. Jair Bolsonaro and the other investigated deny the accusations.
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) was one of the parliamentarians who spent the night in the Senate plenary to press against his father’s arrest and the trial of the coup attempt.
“We are here at 4:44 am. My Senate duty is until 6 am. We are taking turns. We are here making this gesture to occupy the Board of Directors to finally put on the agenda what is best for Brazil,” he said on a social network.
Also according to Flávio, the agenda defended by the opposition could overthrow US fees of 50% against about 36% of Brazilian exports to the USA. Among Trump’s justifications to impose the tariff is the lawsuit against Bolsonaro.

Income tax exemption
The PT leader in the House, Deputy Lindbergh Farias (PT-RJ), considers the occupation of the table inadmissible and considers the action similar to January 8. Occupation prevents project voting involving income tax exemption (IR).
“This is a continued blow. It is blackmail to rid Bolsonaro. Ten million people lose because of them! We want to vote important agendas for the population and income tax exemption is one of them. And they are putting the knife around the population,” he said on a social network.
The Commission on Economic Affairs (CAE) approved yesterday (5) project that exempts the IR who receives up to two minimum wages. The text replaces the Provisional Measure (MP) 1,294 of 2025, edited by the Lula administration. The text awaits a vote in the Senate plenary. Another subject of priority of the Chamber and the Government that awaits a vote in the plenary is the bill that exempts the income tax who receives up to R $ 5 thousand reais.
President
The mayor, Hugo Motta, without criticizing the opposition action, canceled yesterday’s session and called a meeting to this Wednesday (6) to define the voting agenda. “Parliament must be the bridge for understanding,” he said on a social network.
Alcolumbre stated that the occupation is something “unusual and oblivious to democratic principles.” The Senate President made a call to “serenity and the spirit of cooperation.”
“I will hold a meeting of leaders to prevail common sense and will return regular legislative activity, including all political currents can express themselves legitimately,” he concludes in a statement.
