The UDI bench of deputies announced that it will present a constitutional accusation against the Minister of Justice, Marcela Ríos, after the pardon granted to President Gabriel Boric to 12 convicted in the framework of the social outbreak and to the ex-frontist Jorge Mateluna.
Specifically, the deputy Jorge Alessandri stated that “the UDI bench has resolved the presentation of a constitutional accusation against the Minister of Justice, Marcela Ríos, for possible irregularities in the pardon decrees and possible violations of the law in the granting of prison benefits “.
Alessandri indicated that the idea they have is to accuse Ríos of “supporting the teams of other parties that want to do something similar.” The foregoing is in line with what was expressed by the Secretary General of RN, Diego Schalper, who argued that Justice is an “inoperative and ineffective” ministry.
Following the news, the Minister of Justice, Marcela Ríos, reaffirmed that “according to the Constitution, it is the President’s power to grant these pardons. Everyone, since the return to democracy, has granted individual pardons, it is regulated.”
Regarding the accusation, the head of Justice declared that the measure is “a power of the Chamber of Deputies, we are respectful of the powers of the Legislative Power and we are available to attend the necessary procedures and answer any questions that the deputies”.
