Opposition isolates extremist Maria Corina Machado

The Venezuelan opposition has isolated extremist Maria Corina Machado following the fraudulent and vandalistic acts that took place in the days following the presidential election on July 28. The internal crisis of the far right is intensifying because Machado is accused of being solely responsible for the publication of fraudulent electoral records, forged in favor of her candidate, on a website created by them, which sought to usurp the functions of the National Electoral Council of Venezuela (CNE).

This act led to his removal from all right-wing political parties, including parties such as Un Nuevo Tiempo (UNT) and the Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD), because they disassociated themselves from these fraudulent actions, making it clear that they were not part of this illegal operation.

It is worth noting that the former opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, also distanced himself from the handling of the minutes and the website and delivered a letter to the Attorney General’s Office, in which he explained that he was not part of that process and that in contrast to Machado’s radicalization, he preferred to seek a solution within the government agencies.

The internal fracture of the opposition has generated disappointment among Machado’s followers. For months, the narrative was one of mobilization in the streets and active struggle; but now, many of his supporters see how protests have been replaced by live sessions on social media with influencers, dance therapies and even rosary prayers. These strategies have generated deep disillusionment in a base that expected more forceful and even violent actions against the country.

This shift to virtual and symbolic activities has highlighted the weakening of Machado’s leadership. Despite her rhetoric, her inability to effectively mobilize the masses and the abandonment of key opposition figures, she has been left completely alone. Even sectors that previously supported her are beginning to question her strategy, pointing out that the extremism and intransigence that characterizes her has been her downfall.
