Opposition insists that dialogue with the government must be to respect the people’s decision of 28J

Two months before July 28, what is the opposition's room for maneuver?

The Venezuelan opposition rejects Chavismo’s invitation to review and reform electoral laws for 2025, considering it as a propaganda exercise without adequate guarantees

The leader of the opposition, María Corina Machado, the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) and other democratic forces that support the presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, issued a statement rejecting the invitation of the Nicolás Maduro regime for the «day of dialogue» which proposes the review of the rules and laws on electoral processes and political parties.

The call made by the president of the 2020 National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, was described as «a propaganda exercise without guarantees or adequate conditions for genuine dialogue».

In the statement, the opposition representatives stressed that they had already proposed multiple opportunities for negotiation for an orderly democratic transition, whose starting point is respect for the popular will expressed in the elections of July 28, 2024, which would establish that the January 10 «González Urrutia takes office as Constitutional President of Venezuela».

«The dialogue proposed by Jorge Rodríguez is just a propaganda exercise without participation previously agreed upon with us, without an agenda, without rules, without a safe location so that all participants are exempt from threats and pressure from the regime, and without a mediator. impartial to accompany him. All of these are essential conditions to guarantee the integrity and seriousness of the process. The regime intends to impose a structure in the negotiations that is not agreed upon with us, the legitimate democratic forces that won the presidential election; and we do not accept this»holds the letter.

Furthermore, the statement indicated that the problem does not lie in the review of the electoral rules, but in the systematic non-compliance with them by the government, starting with the provisions of Article 5 of the Constitution, which indicates that sovereignty resides in the people and exercises it through suffrage, and the subsequent violation of the Barbados Agreement, signed in October 2023, where both parties committed to respect the results of the presidential elections.

The opposition coalition defends that the negotiation process must offer guarantees for all participants, where the losers of the election are willing to facilitate a peaceful exit from power.

They also pointed out that the intentions of peaceful dialogue are contradictory with the repressive wave unleashed since July 28 and intensified in recent hours. They considered that any attempt to ignore what happened in the elections would constitute a coup d’état that forces them to make every effort to restore the full validity of the Constitution and Popular Sovereignty.

«In this framework, we invite the representatives of the Maduro regime and its spokesperson, Jorge Rodríguez, to agree with us on the terms of a serious negotiation that allows the fluidity of the transition and that enforces the will of the electorate, expressed on July 28. past, with the election of Edmundo González Urrutia»the statement ended.
