Opposition empties honor guard for Belisario Domínguez in the Senate

With an honor guard of legislators from Morena and their allies, since no one from the opposition attended, the Senate remembered the 109th anniversary of the assassination of Belisario Domínguez, and, as has become customary, the medal worn by the name of the senator from Chiapas, despite the fact that this is provided for in the decree that created that award to reward distinguished people for his science or his virtue in eminent degree.

In that decree, from 1953, it is specified that the Belisario Domínguez Medal will be awarded in a solemn session of the Senate every October 7, but since the end of the government of Ernesto Zedillo the date has changed, due to agenda problems of the Executive in turn, and this legislature it has been increasingly postponed, even until December.

This year, according to the president of the Commission for the Belisario Domínguez Medal, Senator Sasil de León Vilar, there are more than 200 candidates, but others may be added, since the deadline to register was extended until the next day 15. Despite For this, he trusted that the award can be delivered before the end of the ordinary period and he hoped that this time President Andrés Manuel López Obrador would attend.

Last year, when the medal was awarded to Senator from Morena Ifigenia Martínez, the federal Executive declined to be present at the solemn session – given the threat of a PAN senator to confront him – and sent his representative to the Secretary of the Interior, Adán Augusto Lopez Hernandez.

Yesterday, at the old headquarters of Xicoténcatl, the presidents of the Senate, Alejandro Armenta, and of the Political Coordination Board of that House, Ricardo Monreal, led the honor guard in tribute to the doctor and politician from Chiapas who was assassinated on October 7 2013 by order of Victoriano Huerta.

The coordinator of the PT, Geovanna Bañuelos, Sasil de León and senators from Morena, including Delfina Gómez, as well as the municipal president of Comitán, Chiapas, Mario Antonio Guillén Domínguez, also attended.

There is no date for the delivery of the medal this year, and the one that is pending in 2020, in which it was decided to award it to medical and health personnel in general for their work during the covid-19 pandemic, will be deposited, along with the diploma. , in the House Museum of Belisario Domínguez, in his native Comitán.

This is due to the fact that the political forces did not agree on which person or institution should receive the award, especially due to the PAN’s strong opposition to the session becoming a recognition of the federal government’s actions to face the pandemic. .

In the wall of honor of the senatorial headquarters will be inscribed in gold letters that the medal went to health personnel, along with the names of the other winners.
