Opposition accuses pressure to vote in favor of Judicial Reform

Alito warns that money is being offered to PRI members

Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, leader of the PRI, warned a few days ago that members of his party are being offered millions of dollars to join the ruling party.

“We are the 14 senators (out of 15) here to tell the youth, the students, all of them that they can trust us, that we will resist each and every pressure, no matter how abusive it may be, and we will assume whatever the cost. No one can bend us and no one can hold us back,” said Moreno.

“The ruling party has offered tens of millions of pesos to migrate to the Morena bench or to stay away from the vote,” he said.

The tricolor leader assured that the PRI members have also received threats to support the Judicial Reform.

“Our parliamentary group has suffered brutal pressures, threats from the ruling party never seen before in Congress and in our country. Offers of threats of factional use of the prosecutor’s offices against legislators and their families and even pressure from the National Electoral Institute (INE),” he said.

Adán Augusto López Hernández, coordinator of Morena senators, denied that money is being offered to members of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) to vote in favor of the Judicial Reform.

“Nothing is being offered to anyone. We have never done that, never, ever,” he told the media.

MC also denounces pressure and attempts to discredit

The coordinator of the senators of Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), Clemente Castañeda, also pointed out that his parliamentary group has been subjected to pressure and discredit.

He said that the senator Daniel Barreda has received threats for opposing the reform.

“There has been a campaign of pressure and even discredit against some of our colleagues. I also know that there are genuine concerns and that is why today we want to leave with you the person who has been the object of much pressure and much slander in recent hours, including threats, who is our colleague Daniel Barreda. And we hold Governor Layda Sansores responsible for all that is behind the pressure on Daniel Barreda, for any attempt at threats, persecution and political pressure,” Castañeda said.

Currently, the senators of the so-called “fourth transformation” of Morena, PT, PVEM and two former PRD members total 85 seats, one short of a qualified majority.

The National Action Party (PAN) has 22 senators, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) 15 and the Citizen Movement (MC) five; that’s 42, plus Manlio Fabio Beltrones, a senator without a party but who is still a PRI member, that’s 43, exactly the number with which the constitutional reform can be stopped.
