Leaders and prominent personalities of the opposition in exile, grouped in the “Space for Dialogue and Confluence between Nicaraguan Actors” announced this Sunday, June 18, the strategy with which they will seek the fall of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Although Murillo recognized that at the moment there are no conditions to pressure Ortega’s departure, since the correlation of forces is on the side of the dictators.
In an online broadcast, moderated by the Nicaraguan journalist Tiffany Roberts and chaired, among other personalities, by the exiled sociologist Haydée Castillo, the opponents presented the “Political Project for the Nicaraguan transition and the day after”; a strategy that proposes two stages in several steps to be fulfilled to remove Ortega and Murillo from power and initiate a democratic transformation of the country. But all this will be possible if and only if the opposing forces finally pool their actions in a unity process with unique leaderships.
In the presentation, the opponents acknowledge that “the correlation of forces is not favourable”, to press the departure of the dictators at this time. Changing that correlation, they say, requires a “vigorous alliance of forces, a vision and strategic action that weakens the dictatorship as much as possible and achieves its removal from power.”

They analyze that by resisting in a fragmented way they wear themselves out and mistrust is generated in the people and in the international community. They also clarify that the opposition currently suffers from a “power vacuum” and there is no clear path to consensus. “There are multiple leaders, but we require a legitimate political leadership to guide the way,” they warn in the proposal.
Likewise, they urged the opposition forces to move at once from the position of regret to the diagnosis of the problem, to “the credible proposal.” They believe that it is possible to get out of the dictatorship, but for the moment they must go to the stage of “accumulation and rearrangement of forces”, not electoral, but to “cooperate from difference and from potentialities”.

The strategy presented consists of three stages. The first proposes a “citizen political strategy to get out of the political and human rights crisis”, which would be executed from now until the end of the dictatorship.
The second stage proposes a “strategy to overcome the socioeconomic emergency and democratic breakdown in which we will find the post-dictatorship country.” And the third proposes a «national project, for a lasting peace (development model) as a proposal for the consecutive democratic governments».

But, the proponents of the plan insist on the warning that “at this time there are no conditions for a peaceful and democratic exit and overcoming this difficulty will depend “fundamentally on our ability to change the current correlation of forces.”
They stress that a dialogue with the dictatorship is not possible because “it only prescribes death, kidnapping and exile.” It is not possible to dialogue with a dictatorship that maintains a de facto state of exception and is aligned with terrorism. And at this point they emphasize that “there is no alternative to political power on the part of the opposition.”
