A group of Nicaraguan opposition organizations sued the Board of Governors of the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) to “not allow” the re-election of Dante Mossi as president of the regional financial entity this Friday, May 12.
The opposition organizations assure that the CABEI has been and continues to be one of the “greatest pillars” of support for the Ortega and Murillo dictatorship financially. The bank has disbursed to the State of Nicaragua around 3.5 billion dollars in projects since 2017.
“… (the loans for Nicaragua are approved) even though the country’s population is smaller than that of Guatemala and Honduras, but it has received almost 26 percent of the CABEI loan portfolio,” they highlight.

“We have asked the bank to take respect for human rights, the rule of law and democracy as a reference framework to approve loans to the Central American countries and, especially to Nicaragua, however, it has not responded to our call,” they add.
In addition, they point out that they are “alarmed” by the way in which Dante Mossi, current CABEI president, “legitimizes without any stupor” the actions of the dictatorship and maintains a “constant attitude of denial” of the violation of human rights in Nicaragua .
According to opponents, the constant approval of loans is taking Nicaragua’s debt margin to the limit in its current country risk conditions.
