Opponents call on the European Parliament to maintain and expand sanctions on Nicaragua

On the eve of the session of the European Parliament (EP), to be held tomorrow, Friday, June 15, and where the case of Nicaragua will be addressed, opposition organizations that make up the Platform for Unity for Democracy (PUDE), called on the EP to ” keep Nicaragua on their agenda.”

In the statement dated this Thursday, the opposition groups also demand to maintain the sanctions already imposed on 21 public officials and extend them to state institutions and the Nicaraguan Army, the latter accused of being a repressive arm of the Ortega regime.

They also noted that “the Nicaraguan democratic opposition appreciates the receptivity of the European Parliament to the message about the urgent need to take decisive action regarding the situation in Nicaragua.”

“We trust that they will continue to denounce and act on the totalitarian drift of the regime led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo,” stressed the member organizations of PUDE.

Nicaragua “at the forefront of the international agenda”

On the other hand, the statement highlights that it is expected that the resolution that will be approved by Parliament, “in addition to condemning what is happening in Nicaragua and establishing a road map for the future to achieve the end of the dictatorship, will place the country in first place.” line on the international agenda.

They also ask that complex legal and diplomatic measures be considered, such as sanctions against state institutions that have been an essential part of the repressive structure, “in order to bring those responsible and accomplices to international justice for crimes against humanity.”

They also recommended that absolute ignorance of the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega as representative of Nicaraguans be considered and that measures be taken to cease financing without conditions provided by international financial institutions such as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Monetary Fund. International; as well as regional financial institutions such as the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI).

The European Parliament is looking for a way to increase the pressure on the Nicaraguan dictatorship, which is becoming more radical every day; however, the Ortega administration continues with its authoritarianism and attacking the international community, as happened on Tuesday night, December 13. June, during the visit of the president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, where the Nicaraguan president took the opportunity to launch himself against the United States and Europe.
