[Opinión] At this rate it stays 5 years

Many of us were convinced that this government was going to be very short-lived. A head of state that he is not prepared for the position and does not have the qualities to exercise it, surrounded by people with a very low moral level that has led the Prosecutor’s Office to open six investigation folders for different crimes, his daughter/sister-in-law detained, his fugitive nephew, former ministers investigated and not found, there were enough indications to predict an early end to this regime.

However, this week it was not possible to have enough votes in Congress to approve the reconsideration of the censure vote on the Interior Minister accused of making changes to the PNP to interfere in investigations involving the president. Everything seems to confirm that the number of ‘Children’ in Congress is greater than originally thought, which would make it very difficult for a presidential vacancy motion to be approved.

There are only two factors left that could alter this equation: the progress of the Prosecutor’s Office’s investigations, which could be enriched with the effective collaboration of some former officials and former allies, and the deterioration of economic activity.

Faced with the officially declared recession in the US, which is one of Peru’s most important trading partners, and the lack of private investment -national and foreign-, which is the engine of economic growth, it is easy to predict an increase in unemployment and poverty that will generate social discontent.

This could be the triggering factor to get the masses out of this immobility in which they find themselves and start massive protests that will ultimately lead to the destabilization of the government.
