More than 30 political organizations and social movements issued a statement from Spain condemning the arrival of Edmundo González in Madrid and denouncing the “launch of a media operation to whitewash the coup of the Venezuelan far right” following the violence unleashed in Venezuela after the non-recognition of the election results of July 28.
The statement said that “the far-right candidate, whom the mainstream press is trying to portray as a democratic leader, has taken part in the electoral coup against the legitimate victory of President Nicolás Maduro, proclaimed by the Venezuelan electoral authority and confirmed by a ruling by the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice.”
The organizations recall in the text that the former candidate González Urrutia “without having presented any electoral appeal in the terms provided by the Law, signed a letter as ‘President Elect’, urging the security forces to carry out a coup d’état to ignore the result of the electoral process.”
The joint statement calls on progressive forces around the world to “respect the election results and the popular sovereignty expressed at the polls, which gave rise to the heroic victory of President Nicolás Maduro.”
He acknowledges that despite years of blockade and sanctions, the Venezuelan economy has recovered and today exhibits compelling figures “with thirteen consecutive quarters of growth in its gross domestic product, which reached more than 8% in its latest calculation.”

Upon the arrival in Spain of former coup candidate Edmundo González Urrutia
The organizations that make up the Movement of Solidarity with the Bolivarian Revolution, in response to the arrival of Edmundo González Urrutia to Spain, warn and denounce that:
The far-right candidate, who the mainstream press is trying to portray as a democratic leader, has taken part in the electoral coup against the legitimate victory of President Nicolás Maduro, proclaimed by the Venezuelan electoral authority and confirmed by a ruling by the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice.
Mr. González Urrutia, after unfoundedly denying the election result, has refused to accept responsibility for the forged documents as part of the aforementioned electoral coup.
In the early hours of July 29, Edmundo González Urrutia declared: “We have in our hands the minutes that prove our categorical and mathematically invincible victory.” However, in a letter addressed to the Prosecutor’s Office and according to the statements of his lawyer, the former candidate denies being responsible for these minutes and affirms that he “had nothing to do” with their publication.
Edmundo González Urrutia promoted, validated and disseminated the fraudulent page that illegally published false “electoral results”, a crime for which he now claims not to be responsible.
On August 7, the Attorney General’s Office announced the opening of a criminal investigation “in response to the publication of the website resultados.com for attempting to illegally usurp the functions of the National Electoral Council, CNE.”
The parties that nominated González Urrutia as a candidate also denied responsibility for the publication of the alleged electoral records during his hearing before the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice.
The same dark character, without having filed any electoral appeal in the terms provided by law, signed a letter as “President-Elect”, urging the security forces to carry out a coup d’état to ignore the result of the electoral process.
That same character, who today they try to present as a “hero”, asked that the results proclaimed by the Electoral Power and verified through expert analysis by the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice be ignored, promoting interventionist, colonialist and destabilizing actions against the country.
The electoral coup against Venezuela included power outages, internet suspension, cyberattacks on the CNE, violent actions against 10 of its offices in the country and threats to its workers, psychological and media operations, a parallel vote counting system and the publication of alleged minutes (whose analysis shows QR code falsification, false signatures, among other irregularities) as a source validated by international organizations to recognize the supposed opposition victory.
The governments and power groups that today join the call to ignore the election results are the same ones that for years have participated in the strategy of maximum pressure for regime change with a criminal blockade, the imposition of 931 unilateral coercive measures, coups d’état, paramilitary incursions and attacks on infrastructure and services, causing serious damage to the human rights of the population.
For all the above reasons, the signatory organizations:
We reject any attempt to attribute to the Venezuelan State an alleged repression or persecution for political purposes, while covering up fascist actions financed by the ultra-right command.
We highlight the information provided by the Attorney General of the Republic regarding the fact that there are no reports of human rights violations, in cases of deaths and injuries, binding on a State security body related to the acts of post-electoral violence.
We support the sovereign decision of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to grant safe conduct to the former candidate, as expressed by its Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, “in compliance with international law and for the sake of the tranquility and political peace of the country,” after “extensive conversations and contacts,” resulting from the agreement between the governments of Venezuela and Spain.
We warn about the exploitation of Venezuela by right-wing and far-right forces, and in particular, the presence of Latin American far-right forces and coup-plotting sectors of the Venezuelan opposition in Madrid.
We call on the progressive forces of the world to respect the electoral results and the popular sovereignty expressed at the polls, which gave the heroic victory to President Nicolás Maduro, after years of blockade and criminal sanctions, in the midst of a hard-won recovery of the Venezuelan economy with thirteen consecutive quarters of growth of its gross domestic product, which reached more than 8% in its latest count.
The Bolivarian people will continue to defeat the forces of imperialism and the oligarchy and will advance steadily in their project of revolutionary transformations within the framework of a multipolar world.
Long live the Bolivarian Revolution, long live President Nicolás Maduro. Long live the people of Venezuela.
