The Federal Highway Police (PRF) released this Thursday (2) the balance of Operation New Year. In the period from December 27th to January 1st, 1,023 accidents occurred on federal highways, a drop of 9.8% in relation to the occurrences recorded in the previous operation (1,134). In the case of deaths, the reduction was 18.6% (from 86 to 70 deaths). The number of injured decreased by 20.8% (from 1,554 to 1,231).
The operation focused on combating drunk driving on federal highways. The PRF recorded 1,577 infractions related to alcohol intoxication, 212 of which were due to the finding that drivers had consumed alcoholic beverages before driving and 1,365 due to refusal to take a breathalyzer test, popularly known as the breathalyzer test.
During the six days of operation, the PRF seized 4,912 kilograms (kg) of marijuana and 116 kg of cocaine. Police also seized eight firearms and recovered 90 vehicles. During this period, 527 people were detained.
