Comprised of the Federal Police (PF), the National Force, the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) and the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), Operation Guardians of the Biome to curb criminal practices in the legal Amazon, in particular burnings and fires.
With more than BRL 200 million in investments from the federal government, the joint action will start a new phase on June 20th, informed today (14) the Director of Operations of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, delegate Fernando de Souza Oliveira, in an interview with the program The Voice of Brazil.
On the effectiveness of the operation, opened on March 25Oliveira stated that Guardians of the Biome was responsible for eliminating 30% of fires in the forest, that is, about 17,000 occurrences.
According to the delegate, the operation was also responsible for withdrawing around R$ 221 million in machinery and equipment from organized crime operating in the regions. Fernando de Souza Oliveira also said that the expectation is to surpass the results of the first phase of the Guardians of the Bioma.
“Expectation is the best. This year we will have a drought, but not as severe a drought as last year. We have already started the integration of all forces and we are raising funds to pass on to the states, training firefighters. So the whole apparatus is already set up,” he explained.
