Open waters: Brazil takes silver and bronze in World Cup stage

Saturday (12) was a Brazilian double – silver and bronze – at the Open Water World Cup stage in Setúbal (Portugal). Multi-time champion Ana Marcela Cunha was runner-up in the women’s 10 kilometer race, completing the course in 2h18m33.80, three seconds behind the winner, German Lea Boy (2h18m30.70). It is the second time that Ana Marcela and Viviane from Bahia have stood on the podium together in stages of the World Cup. In May, in Golfo Aranci (Italy), Ana Marcela won gold and Vivane won silver in the 10 km marathon. Olympic champion in Tokyo and with seven world titles – five in 25 km races and two in 5 km races – Ana Marcela was left off the podium at the Paris Games, finishing in fourth place in the 10 km marathon.

Ana Marcela leads the World Cup standings with an advantage, with 2000 points. In second place with 1,650 points is Viviane Jungblut from Rio Grande do Sul, tied with Italian Bettina Fabian. The last two stages of the Open Water World Cup will take place in Hong Kong (October 26th and 27th) and Saudi Arabia (November 22nd and 23rd).

The Brazilian female delegation also included Cibele Jungblut – Viviane’s sister – and Lizian Sobral. Cibele finished the race in seventh place, with a time of 2:18:37.60, and Lizian (2:38:37.10) concluded the race in 17th place.

In the men’s race, Brazil competed with Matheus Melecchi (10th place with a time of 2:09:17.50), Bernardo Gavioli (12th/ 2:10:05.10), Leonardo Macedo (17th/ 2:13:19.70) and Henrique Figueirinha (18th /2:13:33.20).
