ONPECO asks to raise salaries and index pensions to face inflation

ONPECO pide elevar salarios e indexen pensiones para enfrentar inflación

He National Observatory for Consumer Protection (ONPECO) believes that the only way to counteract the effects of food price hikesmedicines and other services is indropping pensions and raising wages both in the public and private sectors.

According to information from central bankin January, food, non-alcoholic beverages and transport were the most affected by the increases, and in February, the indicators show that there are no immediate changes in the behavior of inflation at a global level.

ONPECO revealed that the price of the main foods in the basic basket has reached an unattainable ceiling for the majority, which is even more worrying when solutions are not seen in the short and medium term.

“The only way to deal with what is happening is to provide more income to families who have seen the value of money with which to face their day-to-day life lose,” says a statement from ONPECO.

ONPECO understands that we must prepare to face food shortages by supporting family farming, producers in general, and drawing up a public policy based on sustainability to achieve food security and sovereignty.

“The fact that quality food cannot be accessed due to its high prices threatens food security, so the immediate solution is salary compensation for the members of the first three quintiles, with which the Central Bank measures the social composition to express the consumer price index”, indicates the ONPECO statement.

Quintile one is the one with the lowest income, it is precisely this sector that must face the highest food prices, followed by quintile 2 with the same deprivations and quintile 3, which is the middle class, the one that has had to reduce their expenses because their income does not allow them the “luxury” of at least eating well.

The price of goods such as water, which has suffered a one hundred percent increase, and products such as bananas, chicken, eggs, rice, edible fats, among other foods that are further away from budgets every day, they are ingredients against the right to food and food security.

Organizations such as the FAO and the UN have warned of a famine generated by wars, the pandemic and natural phenomena; They have issued the warning for governments to take measures in this regard, but in our country there are no signs in this regard.

Only a balanced salary adjustment and a good increase in pensions could cope with the situation of rising food prices, which is where the phenomenon of inflation is most felt.
