ONPE: when would the second round of the 2022 Regional Elections be?

The National Elections Jury (JNE) recalled this Monday, October 3, what are the requirements to proclaim winners of the 2022 Regional Elections that were held on Sunday, October 2, as well as in which cases there will be a second round.

In this case (regional elections) the law provides that in order to proclaim the winner of a governor and lieutenant governor, At least 30% of valid votes must be obtained”, said the electoral body on its Twitter account.

Therefore, in the regions where this minimum number of votes cannot be reached, “The two lists that obtained the most votes in the first election will go to the second round”.

While in the case of municipal elections, the winner of the election is proclaimed the one who obtains the greatest number of votes.

When will the second round be?

Article 5 of the Regional Election Law 27683 states that the president and vice president of the regional government are jointly elected by direct suffrage for a period of four (4) years.

And if no formula exceeds the aforementioned percentage (30%), a second election is held within thirty (30) calendar days following the proclamation of the official countin all constituencies that so require, in which the formulas that reached the two highest votes participate.

In this second election, the formula of president and vice president that obtains the simple majority of valid votes is proclaimed elected.”, adds the rule.

For example, if the results were announced this first week of October, the second round would be 30 days later, that is, the first week of November.

In 2018, the Second Regional Election was held on Sunday, December 9.
