In order to participate in the 2022 Regional and Municipal Elections, political parties, electoral alliances and regional movements must call Internal Elections between January 15 and 22, and communicate this to the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) within three days of the date of the call.
These deadlines and others set both by the ONPE as for him National Election Jury (JNE) they are non-extendable and mandatory for political organizations.
According to the current legislation, only those who integrate the formulas and lists that are winners in the internal elections will be able to compete in the regional and municipal elections scheduled for Sunday, October 2.
Parties, electoral alliances and regional movements required to hold internal elections are those that are registered or have requested registration in the JNE’s Register of Political Organizations until January 5.
How and when will the internal elections be?
Organizations can choose between two methods of electing their candidates:
- Direct election: On May 15, members and affiliates will directly elect the candidates who will run for the positions of governors, vice-governors, regional councillors, mayors and aldermen of provincial and district municipalities.
- Election through delegates: On May 15, affiliates will elect the delegates, who will vote a week later, on May 22, to elect their candidates.

The president of the central electoral body of the political organization must send the ONPE the following:
– The call in which one of the modalities of internal election is specified.
– The accreditation of the members of the central electoral body, which will be in charge of coordinating with the ONPE everything related to the organization of the Internal Elections.
