Only 21.7% of toilets connected to public sewer

Of households with sanitary facility of toilet in the Dominican Republic, barely 21.7% It has it connected to a public sewer, according to the results of the Enhogar-2022 survey.

The investigation reveals that this percentage corresponds to the 82.4% of households in the country that have a public health service. toilet for private use at home, and also indicates that households in the provinces of Elías Piña and Monte Cristi are those with the lowest percentage of households with sanitary toilet for private use (44.1% and 53.8%, respectively).

This service is mostly deficient in the lowest socioeconomic group, representing the 37.7% of households in this group.

The probabilistic sample selected for ENHOGAR-2022 was 40,008 homes. However, since more than one dwelling was identified in some of the selected dwellings, the total number of dwellings visited amounted to 40,243, from which an effective sample of 35,665 was obtained with a response rate (TR) of 88.6%.

Drinking water

The investigation, carried out by the National Statistics Office (ONE), indicates that 53% of households in the country receive water for domestic use from the aqueduct, inside the home. However, in very low socioeconomic households, the percentage drops to 7.5%.

In addition, that 44.6% of the households in the Dominican Republic who receives the service at least one day a week, receives water service for domestic use 2 to 3 days a week. While 30.4% of households receive five hours per day, when they receive it, of drinking water service per week; in the Enriquillo region this percentage rises to 51.5 %.

There is currently a cholera outbreak in the La Zurza neighborhood, in the National District, where eight positive cases have been registered. In addition, the Ministry of Public Health is investigating six new suspected cases detected in patients in Santo Domingo.

The bacterium that causes cholera has already been detected in the Isabela, a tributary that feeds the Ozama River and borders about 10 sectors of the northern part of the National District.

The La Zurza sector has been intervened by the authorities in this situation, facilitating access to drinking water through trucks. This neighborhood has a large number of houses that dump waste into the ravines and into the river.
