The National Emergency Office (ONEMI) delivered a balance of the State of Precaution, due to the threat of a minor tsunami, and which has already been extended to 10 regions of the country, as a result of the submarine volcanic eruption in Tonga.
The deputy director of ONEMI, Claudio Aldea, recalled that “this state of precaution is established when there is a threat of a minor tsunami, which is between 30 centimeters and one meter and if this occurs and is determined, people must leave the beach area. , coastal walks, coves”.
“At the moment, the reports indicate that people have complied with the instructions and have left the beach area in a calm and orderly manner,” added the authority.
In addition, Aldea maintained that “the idea is that people get out of the water, they have to get out of the water, that is, there cannot be people bathing or in the coves that have activities on the water’s edge either, they have to suspend activities.”
“As long as the state of precaution does not change, that is what people should do (leave the beach), that is, do not enter or approach those areas where there is water, because differences in level occur, it is seen how the tidal wave (…) the idea is to prevent it”, he added.
At the moment, the regions in a State of Precaution are: Arica and Parinacota, Atacama, Coquimbo, Valparaíso, O’Higgins, Ñuble, Biobío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos.
