Onemi declares Red Alert in Valdivia and Paillaco due to forest fire

The National Emergency Office (Onemi) declared a Red Alert for the communes of Valdivia and Paillaco, Los Ríos region, following a forest fire that threatens both communes.

In this regard, the mayoress of Valdivia, Carla Amtmann, indicated that “Onemi has decided to carry out a preventive evacuation in the entire Los Guindos sector. We have a shelter and mobilization available to carry out this preventive evacuation work.”

“We have this fire close to our municipal landfill where all the garbage from our region arrives, and therefore tomorrow (today Friday) for preventive reasons, household cleaning will not be collected, nor will garbage be received from other communes. “Amtmann added.

In this sense and as a result of the emergency, Onemi alerted the evacuation of the Los Guindos sector via SAE messaging.

“Due to a forest fire, Onemi requests the evacuation of the Los Guindos sector, in the Valdivia commune, Los Ríos region. Onemi activated SAE messaging. Act calmly and abide by the instructions of the authority and the response teams,” the agency informed via Twitter.

The fire started in the Paillaco commune and, overnight, spread to Valdivia, forcing the sector to be evacuated after consuming more than 120 hectares of forest. Two brigades, five technicians and a CONAF command post work in the emergency. There are also four brigades from Forestal Arauco, Paillaco, Valdivia and Reumén fire brigades.
