One year in prison for Cuban in Cienfuegos that stole five potato quintals

Lima, Peru – A Cuban in the province of Cienfuegos identified as Javier Santana Rodríguez was sentenced to a year in prison for the theft of five quintals of potatoes in the Carmelina Base Business Unit, in the town of Horquita.

A state newspaper report September 5 He points out that the trial was “exemplary” and was held in the Popular Municipal Court of Abraus.

According to the investigation, Santana Rodríguez stole about 230.05 kilograms of potatoes on February 16 at about 2:00 pm. The stolen product was valued by the competent authorities in 1,204 Cuban pesos (CUP) per quintal, for a total price of 6,020 CUP.

“When the defendant traveled around the company’s offices, in an animal traction vehicle belonging to his father, with the tuber in his possession, with the purpose of leaving, he was detected by an agent of the public order and subsequently proceeded to formulate the complaint,” says the official note.

There was no economic involvement because the Basic Carmelina Hernity recovered the five quintals of potatoes.

In addition to a year of correctional work with internment, Santana Rodríguez was applied the accessory sanction of rights deprivation, the loss of the right to suffrage, to occupy management positions and the prohibition Cuba’s exit until it meets the sanction imposed.

This case adds to other recent judgments also considered “exemplary” by the authorities of the Cuban regime around the island.

At the beginning of September, the Criminal Chamber of the Popular Provincial Court of Ciego de Ávila condemned a young Cuban in the judicial headquarters of Morón after being arrested in possession of 206 synthetic cannabinoid papers, known for “chemical”.

The increase in drug trafficking in Cuba has forced the Government to adopt a strategy that Castro propaganda describes as “zero tolerance”, with sentences that reach up to 30 years in prison.

In this case, the sentenced young (unphewed identity) was 18 years old, “practically a teenager” as described by the state newspaper Invader.
